Abstract Development of an effective means to control hospital-associated infections remains a major concern to the healthcare industry. Although statistical process control techniques have been used to monitor these infections, no effort has been made to systematically understand their spread. A methodology is presented to model the spread of infections in a pediatric intensive care unit and to evaluate the effectiveness of intervention efforts. The approach integrates simulation and risk analysis techniques with SPC methodologies.
