Title Finding Knowledge Lost in Data: Data Quality in Physician Report Cards and Pay for Performance Programs
Author(s) Wendy Novicoff
Topic Performance Measurement
Abstract The demand for information about the quality of healthcare has increased markedly in recent years. This includes access to report cards published through groups such as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and pay-for-performance programs mandated by insurance companies. Since this information is available to the public and can have financial consequences, physicians and hospital administrators are concerned about the integrity and applicability of the information presented. An overview is presented of various pay-for-performance programs’ report card initiatives currently used to quantify the quality of care in healthcare organizations. Data choices and data quality as well as policy implications associated with these reporting systems are investigated.
