Engaging and Empowering the Workforce

Abstract A simple conceptual tool, the process diagram, models all the essential elements of an effective process. By using this tool, champions or leaders of process improvement projects (e.g., lean rapid improvement events or Six Sigma) can identify the scope of the effort along with missing or weak elements of the process to be improved. The process diagram provides a powerful picture of the production system that focuses everyone’s thinking on the process. This paper concludes with several examples from a variety of different business environments, including accounting, sales, procurement, distribution, manufacturing, construction, and banking.
