Data Analysis

Abstract At both the organizational and the individual level, many in the manufacturing industry do not understand the limits under which they operate. For quality purposes, the three most important types of limits are specification limits, which define the range of values that will result in a product that performs satisfactorily for customers; control limits, which define a range of values that will result in a product that is in control for process control purposes; and disposition limits, which define a range of values that will allow a batch of product to move along the path to shipment to the customer. Reasonableness limits, which define values that are so far off the norm that they are almost certainly the result of error, are also often useful. Specification limits are primarily useful for interactions with customers and management, while the other types of limits are useful in making daily decisions about a manufacturing operation.
