Engaging and Empowering the Workforce

Abstract Breakthroughs in creative and innovative thinking in the workplace require engagement and imagination, a spirit of curiosity, and a readiness to notice and question everything. Business and organizational success is about being different in ways that deliver greater value to customers. Noting that most professionals read the same journals and attend the same meetings and conferences as others in their profession, the author suggests six approaches to strengthening your ability and that of your organization: broaden your reading horizons, search for new ideas, ask questions, learn from your customers, befriend people outside your usual circle, and cast a wider net to tap sources of inspiration. A sidebar article reviews the author’s new book, Surrounded by Geniuses: Unlocking the Brilliance in Yourself, Your Colleagues, and Your Organization.
