Abstract Emotional intelligence, or EI, is one of the most important qualities of great leaders. It is also an important quality for successful organizations. The four components of EI—self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management—apply to organizations as well as individuals. The strategic planning process for EI begins with a thorough examination of the organization’s emotional and business state. The next step is to create mission, vision, and value statements for the organization. Then a strategic agenda and an action plan must be formulated and put into operation. Finally, leaders must redesign their organizations to support employee empowerment and the generation of new leaders. Heartland Health’s EI initiative is presented as an example of the process.
