Abstract Hidden barriers to the success of continuous improvement programs exist in most companies and often transcend tactics applied to produce cultural change. These cultural conditions are not always obvious, but their symptoms include organizational silos that are perpetuated or tolerated by management, delayed processes or capital approvals, and personality conflicts that interfere with communication. Process orientation addresses the people side of improvement by breaking down silos, improving communication, and reducing rework when multiple departments are involved. When employees practice customer/supplier thinking, they tend to incorporate the process orientation approach into everything they do. Process orientation is the foundation of any continuous improvement program.
